Early morning pursuit ends with arrest

A Hopkinsville man is facing numerous charges following an early Sunday morning pursuit that ended at the James Village Apartments.

A Hopkinsville police officer attempted to stop 26-year old Tavarious Mathews of Hopkinsville for driving without headlights about 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of East Ninth and East 10th Street, with an arrest citation saying Mathews didn’t stop and sped up to 60 mph.

He allegedly failed to stop at five different stop signs and nearly struck two officers who were out on a separate incident on Central Avenue.

Police say he nearly struck oncoming traffic as he turned onto Walnut Street.

He eventually came to a stop at the James Village Apartments on East 21st Street and was arrested.

A search allegedly revealed an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Mathews is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, several traffic violations and possession of an open alcohol container.
