Rotary makes several presentations, Hour Club donations needed

Two nights of the 73rd WHOP Rotary Radio Auction are complete and there are still several ways you can help make this year’s event successful.

A Rotary foundation grant of $5,000 was presented last night to the Christian County Literacy Council to assist with publishing a book for local children, set in Hopkinsville and focused on the Council’s annual Vidalia onion fundraiser.  The book will be dedicated in memory of Carolyn “Mrs. Pickle” Haddock who was an Arts Council board member and long-time supporter of the Rotary Auction.

The Rotary Club of Hopkinsville also presented a $15,000 foundation grant to the Pennyroyal Arts Council in support of youth camps and programming in the arts.

WHOP Radio was acknowledged for its long commitment to the Rotary Auction, having broadcast the auction for the entirety of its 73 years, and current WHOP General Manager Jeff Sisk was acknowledged by fellow Rotarians with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

While the auction total runs close to last year’s amount through two nights and the diner and sweet shop is doing much better this year, cash donations to the Hour Club are down. Through two nights, Rotary has raised just over $184,000, down by about $17,000 from last year’s number at the same point.

Donations of $182 or more to the Hour Club are the best way to make an impact and Auction Chair Brandon Killebrew says call 270-886-3034 or log on to hopkinsvillerotary.com if you’re willing to help.

He says they’re also still accepting items for the auction.

The local Rotary student Interact clubs are collecting lightly used baseball equipment in the lobby each evening to be donated to Kentucky communities affected by recent natural disasters.

Lunch is served each day through Friday from 11 until 1 at the War Memorial Building and dinner is served each night of the auction from 5 until 8.

The auction airs each evening beginning at 6 on 98.7 Lite FM, online at lite987whop.com, Spectrum Cable Channel 376 and on the Hopkinsville Rotary Facebook and YouTube pages.
