Todd County forest fire contained, fire weather watch continues Thursday

A large forest fire in northern Todd County has been fully contained and the Fire Weather Watch for the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky continues Thursday morning through the evening.

Todd County Emergency Management Director Daniel Smith says the Kentucky Department of Forestry has remained on scene near Jonah Wilson Road just north of Lake Malone and they report the fire to be 100 percent contained. He says there may still be spot fires and smoke, but Forestry officials will continue to monitor the area for any significant flare-ups.

Approximately 40 acres of wooded area burned and it’s believed the fire started with a tree falling onto a power line.

Fire crews from Clifty, Allegre, Sharon Grove, Lewisburg and Dunmor were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and worked to access the fire in the steep heavily wooded terrain until command was turned over to the Kentucky Department of Forestry.

No homes or other structures were damaged and there are no reported injuries.

The Fire Weather Watch is issued for Thursday morning through evening, as the National Weather Service in Paducah says gusty winds and low relative humidity levels will cause any fires that begin to spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended Thursday.
