The 73rd WHOP Rotary Radio Auction got off to a good start Monday night and there are still five more days and nights to help the club raise money to send local students to college.
Rotarians made three presentations on night one of the auction, including the previously reported $100,000 to the City of Hopkinsville to go toward construction of an ‘inclusive park’ on Pardue Lane. They also presented $5,000 to Jeffers Bend in support of youth programming and $3,500 to the local YMCA in support of a swimming program for special needs children.
The first night of the auction brought in $6,698—down by $755 from last year’s Monday number. The Diner and Sweet Shop made $1,839, up by just over $400 from last year and the Hour Club stands at $115,692, down by just over $19,000 from a year ago after one night.
While donations of $182 or more to the Hour Club is the largest way Rotary raises money, Auction Chair Brandon Killebrew says don’t forget about the Goat Club led by local historian William Turner, where you can give any cash amount and carry on a decades-long tradition of buying the old goat and giving it back.
Last year’s introduction of the ‘split the pot’ raffle was very popular and Killebrew says it’s back again for 2023.
A new service being offered this year is item delivery for larger items at a cost of $50.
Lunch begins Tuesday and continues each day through Friday from 11 until 1 at the War Memorial Building and dinner is served each night of the auction from 5 until 8.
The auction airs each evening beginning at 6 on 98.7 Lite FM, online at lite987whop.com, Spectrum Cable Channel 376 and on the Hopkinsville Rotary Facebook and YouTube pages.
