Attorney hopes to resolve 2021 shooting case

The attorney representing the suspect accused of shooting a woman in May of 2021 on North Elm Street is again hopeful the case can be resolved prior to trial.

David Rye represents 26-year old Marshawn Taylor of Hopkinsville and told the court Monday he just needs some time to determine if a plea offer from former assistant commonwealth’s attorney  Jerad Smith is still acceptable to current Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen and he’ll then talk with his client.

He told Christian Circuit Judge Andrew Self he believes the case will be resolved, but they’ll set a trial date on May 1 if an agreement can’t be reached.

Taylor allegedly shot 27-year old Marka Smith of Owensboro in the wrist and hip while she was sitting in a vehicle in the 100 block of North Elm in May of 2021. He’s charged with assault in the first-degree, first-degree wanton endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
