Sports Update 4/17/2023

>>Grizzlies Drop Game One Against Lakers

(Memphis, TN)  —  The Grizzlies got blown out in the second half of their opening round playoff matchup against the Lakers in Memphis.  The team got outscored 69-47 over the final two quarters and lost to LA 128-112.  Jaren Jackson Jr led all scorers with 31 points while Desmond Bane netted 22 of his own.  Ja Morant scored 18 points in 30 minutes before leaving the game with a hand injury.  Coach Taylor Jenkins said X-rays came back negative.  The Grizz will try to bounce back in Game Two of the best-of-seven series in Memphis Wednesday night.

>>Falcons Sign Bud Dupree

(Atlanta, GA)  —  The Falcons are adding a veteran defensive player to their roster.  ESPN reports Bud Dupree has signed a one-year deal to join Atlanta.  The 30-year-old played 11 games for the Titans last season and had four sacks to go with 18 tackles.  Tennessee released the defensive end in March after signing a five-year, 82-and-a-half-million-dollar deal back in 2021.

>>Matt Fitzpatrick Wins RBC Heritage In Playoff

(Hilton Head Island, SC)  —  Matt Fitzpatrick is celebrating a victory at the RBC Heritage after taking down defending champion Jordan Spieth in a playoff.  Fitzpatrick and Spieth finished tied atop the leaderboard at 17 under par after the final round of play, but a birdie on the third playoff hole lifted Fitzpatrick to the win.    This is Fitzpatrick’s second PGA TOUR title in his 122nd career start.

>>Kyle Larson Wins Martinsville For First Time

(Martinsville, VA)  —  Kyle Larson is celebrating a NASCAR Cup Series victory after taking home the checkered flag in the NOCO 400 at historic Martinsville Speedway.  Larson made a late pass on Joey Logano and led the final 30 laps to secure the win.  It’s Larson’s second win of the season and his first career victory at Martinsville.  Logano finished second while Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five finishers. The drivers will head to Talladega for the GEICO 500 next Sunday.
