Trial scheduled in East Fourth Street murder case

A new trial date was set in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday morning for Tavaris Quarles, the man charged with murder for the shooting death of Christopher Montrell Mumford at a home in the 800 block of East Fourth Street in May of last year.

Special prosecutor Clayton Adams says he only recently received the file in the case and needs some time to go over the evidence before trial.

Judge John Atkins scheduled trial for July 31.

Attorney Sands Chewning will argue Quarles acted in self-defense during a May 10 stand your ground hearing, as he says Mumford came to Quarles’ door armed with a gun.

Chewning says he and Adams are finalizing an agreed order on some evidence and Adams says he will likely go to the grand jury to indict Quarles for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
