Probation denied for Dollar General robbery suspect

Probation was denied Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court for the man who committed robbery at the West Seventh Street Dollar General in October of last year.

Edward Gilstrap pled guilty in February to robbery in the second-degree as part of a deal that came with a recommended five-year sentence.

Public defender Eric Bearden says Gilstrap’s mental health has improved while in jail, as he’s been properly medicated, and Gilstrap is willing to enter a facility for mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Judge John Atkins denied probation for now.

He says Bearden can apply for shock probation in a month and he’ll be receptive to it if there’s a plan in place to put Gilstrap in a facility.

On October 18, Gilstrap left the West Seventh Street Dollar General Store with stolen merchandise while making threats to a clerk that he had a knife.
