Trial date vacated, bond reduction denied in Hazel Street murder case

Documents have been reviewed and the defense attorney for murder suspect Leon Grimes filed several motions in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon.

Attorney Ted Shouse informed the court that he recently received information from newly appointed Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen that she discovered some files that had been tabbed with a note saying to not show the defense—she immediately informed Shouse, who went through the files.  He says he found two documents that he considers troubling and in his client’s favor and he is fairly confident he did not have them before now, so he requested that the trial date of April 3 be vacated.

He also requested he be allowed to receive a copy of those documents—Bolen says she has no objection to doing so, but wants to be careful to not hand over any private information concerning the victim or the victims family.

Judge Andrew Self ruled they work out a compromise on the documents and granted the request to delay the trial to give everyone more time to work out the information.  Shouse says this event is not Bolen’s fault, but it also not his client’s fault, so he requested that Grimes’ bond be reduced.

Judge Self denied the request for bond reduction, saying Grimes remains a flight risk and at this time, the circumstances of the case have not changed.

Another pretrial hearing was set for April 12. Grimes is alleged to have shot Calvin Buckner in the chest at a party on Hazel Street in July of 2021.
