Attorney to file ‘stand your ground’ defense in East Fourth Street murder

A bond motion was denied in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday morning for Tavaris Quarles, the man charged with murder for the shooting death of Christopher Montrell Mumford at a home in the 800 block of East Fourth Street in May of last year.

Attorney Sands Chewning represents Quarles and says he intends to prove that Quarles was acting in self-defense when Mumford came to his door armed with a gun.

Special prosecutor Clayton Adams opposed bond modification, noting Quarles’ past criminal history.

Chewning intends to file a ‘stand your ground’ motion, with Judge John Atkins denying the bond request for now until he sees that document.

Judge Atkins will hear the ‘stand your ground’ motion at a May 10 hearing.
