Local legislators talk sports wagering legislation

Even though it successfully passed the House, the future of a sports betting bill in Kentucky remains uncertain in the Senate, where it may not have the votes to pass.

One legislator that will strongly be against it is Senator Whitney Westerfield, who is staunchly against any type of gambling in the state, and he says it’s his hope that it is dead on arrival. He calls its a tax that targets the most vulnerable and says he will vote against it.

Representative Walker Thomas says he voted against the measure and he remains against any type of expanding gambling, saying he finds it odd that the House voted to ban so-called ‘gray machines’, but then voted to make sports betting legal.

Meanwhile, Representative Myron Dossett voted in favor of sports betting, saying that people are already doing it, so it just makes sense to keep that money in Kentucky.

Whatever the fate of sports wagering, any vote will not take place until the legislature returns from the veto recess at the end of March.
