Devin Burkes Named Co-National Player of Week
Kentucky catcher Devin Burkes was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Co-National Players of the Week after a blistering week that saw him post an OPS of better than 2.000 and turn in just the third game of at least seven runs batted in over the past 15 years at UK. Burkes had eight hits in a series victory over Wright State, all of which went for extra bases (seven doubles, one home run). He currently leads the country in doubles and doubles per game. A look at Burkes’ performance over the full week: 4 games, .563, 1.188 slugging percentage, .667 on-base percentage, 1.855 OPS, 9-16, 5 runs, 7 doubles, 1 home run, 11 RBI, 19 total bases, 2-2 steals, 2 walks, 3 hit by pitch.
Cardinals Wrap Up Season-Opening Homestand Tuesday
The University of Louisville baseball team finishes off an eight-game homestand on Tuesday matching up with Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. Louisville and Eastern Kentucky square off for the 123rd time on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals are 72-49-1 all-time against the Colonels and 20-2 during Dan McDonnell’s tenure. The two teams have met in all but four seasons dating back to 1980.
Cardinals Play Host to Bellarmine in 2023 Home Opener
After three straight weeks on the road to start the season, the Cardinals will open a six-game home stand at Ulmer Stadium starting with a Feb. 28 matchup against cross-town rival Bellarmine. First pitch is at 5 p.m. and admission is free.
WKU Baseball to Host Bellarmine on Tuesday
WKU Baseball is set to host Bellarmine for a midweek game beginning at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Nick Denes Field. WKU and Bellarmine have met 42 times in program history, with the Hilltoppers owning a 30-12 all-time series edge. The teams met for a midweek last season on May 17, 2022, when the Hilltoppers came away with a 10-2 victory in Louisville, Ky. Neither team has won two in a row against each other since the 1987 season when the Hilltoppers beat the Knights twice in the month of March, winning 6-1 on the 5th and 4-1 on the 24th.
Racers to Host Kent State for Two-Game Midweek Set
Murray State baseball is set to host Kent State at Johnny Reagan field for a two-game swing on Tuesday and Wednesday with each game set to start at 3 p.m. This is the first ever meeting between the Racers and Golden Flash.
Govs trek down I-24 to face nationally-ranked Commodores
Austin Peay continues its challenging seven-game road trip when it meets nationally-ranked Vanderbilt in a 4:30 p.m., Tuesday outing at Hawkins Field in Nashville. 81 previous meetings, Vanderbilt leads, 54-25-2. The Govs and Commodores series began with single games in 1938 and 1958 before becoming a nearly annual affair in 1971. Austin Peay has won three of the 21 meetings between the teams since Tim Corbin took over as head coach in 2003. Only one of those wins has come at Hawkins Field, a 7-6 victory in 10 innings during the 2019 season.
