Bryan Blount III, former Elkton mayor, WWII veteran and philanthropist, dies at 99

Former mayor of Elkton and well-known Todd County philanthropist Bryan Blount III died Monday morning at the age of 99.

Blount served as Elkton’s mayor from 1990 through 1998 and Brent Spurlin, who served under him as councilman and considered him a longtime friend, says Blount adopted Todd County as his home and did anything he could to make it a better place to live.

Blount continued to serve the community in many ways, including on the Elkton Planning Commission, Todd County Industrial Foundation, Citizens for Academic Excellence in Todd County and Elkton Rotary Club. He also helped found what was the Helping Hands Clinic that served the uninsured and is now the Blount Rural Health Center.

He was a World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart and he was at the center of honoring veterans in Todd County.

The Todd County Chamber of Commerce named its citizen of the year award in his honor and he received the inaugural award in 2019.

Arrangements are incomplete at Latham Funeral Home.
