Lafayette continuing as incorporated town

Christian County’s smallest city has no intention of giving up its incorporated status anytime soon, despite recent reports it may happen against the town’s will.

Department for Local Government spokesman Logan Fogle named Lafayette among nine Kentucky cities that could be dissolved in a Herald-Leader story.  Some of the towns didn’t have a functioning government to accept COVID relief funds that were designated to each Kentucky municipality and at least some didn’t meet mandatory requirements of listing an address and phone number for their city hall.

Neither of those issues apply to Lafayette, according to Mayor Jared Thatcher, who tells WHOP News, “Lafayette filed all necessary paperwork for COVID funds in 2021, was approved for our expenditures, and have spent the money.”

He continues, “I talk to DLG at least once per month and they know we have a functioning government.”

Contacted by WHOP, Fogle indicated the town doesn’t appear to be in imminent danger of dissolution, saying “LaFayette has since reached out to DLG and submitted the documentation required by statute. The documentation will undergo review. DLG is ensuring each city has every opportunity to submit the required documentation, and we appreciate LaFayette’s cooperation.”

Located in southwestern Christian County, Lafayette has a population of about 174.
