Comer talks Gov. primary, TVA rolling blackouts in WHOP interview

Western Kentucky Congressman and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer discusses the Republican gubernatorial primary and recent TVA rolling blackouts, among other issues, in an interview that’ll air Sunday morning on WHOP.

The crowded GOP primary includes Auditor Mike Harmon, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, former U.N. Ambassador Kelly Craft, Ag. Commissioner Ryan Quarles and several others, but Comer—who lost in the 2015 primary to Matt Bevin by 83 votes—expects Craft and Cameron to be the favorites.

It’s possible the winner of the primary could garner a relatively small percentage of the overall total of votes and that’s why Comer says he’d support Kentucky moving to a run-off style system when no candidate receives a majority.

Meanwhile, the U.S. debt ceiling was reached again Thursday and while Comer acknowledges it will have to be raised again relatively soon, he says that won’t happen in the Republican House without some spending cuts.

Comer looks back at the 2020 closure of the Paradise coal power plant when criticizing TVA for having to institute rolling blackouts for the first time during December’s cold spell, saying the demand is only going to grow in the future and a diverse energy policy is required.
