Hopkinsville man arraigned in Guthrie attempted murder case

Arraignment was held Tuesday morning in Todd District Court for the Hopkinsville man charged with attempted murder in connection with a recent shooting in Guthrie.

A not guilty plea was entered by public defender Darin Higgs on behalf of 19-year old Zaelin Fox of Hopkinsville and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday of next week.

An arrest warrant from Guthrie police for Fox says a group of people had been hanging out together at a home in the Green Acres Subdivision in the early morning hours of January 7 when Fox and Jerry Britt arrived at the residence in a gray Mitsubishi.

Another man identified as Javon Byars arrived at the home and got into a fight with Britt, according to the warrant, which says that’s when Fox got out of the Mitsubishi and shot in Byars’ direction, striking him in the hip.

Fox and Britt fled the scene in their car and police say Byars stood back up and slapped the mother of his child and punched an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who heard the commotion and came outside.

Byars then went by private vehicle to Tennova Health and was later transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Fox is charged with four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, in addition to attempted murder.
