Probation denied for East 18th Street shooter

Probation was denied Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court for a woman who shot a man four times during an incident last June on East 18th Street.

Taraneisha Quarles recently pled guilty to assault under extreme emotional disturbance for shooting 45-year old David Powell four times with a pistol, causing injuries that sent him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith says the deal was made in part because Powell hasn’t cooperated with the prosecution.

Quarles is also charged with flagrant non-support and at sentencing Wendesday, Quarles asked for probation so she can work and hopefully pay her child support obligations.

Judge John Atkins ultimately denied probation and sentenced her to five years in prison, but will consider shock probation and he encouraged her attorney to help her find employment that would be awaiting her if she got out.

It will be at least a month before the shock probation can be considered.
