The Kentucky House approved legislation during the first week of the General Assembly session to reduce the state income tax by a half-point in January of next year to an even 4 percent and local lawmakers are on-board with eventually getting the state to zero income tax.
Representative Myron Dossett says tax reform has long been needed to compete with Tennessee and while additional services have been made subject to the sales tax, he’s proud groceries and medication are still not taxed.
Representative Walker Thomas says there are stop-gaps in place to keep the income tax from decreasing too quickly for Kentucky revenues to keep up with.
House Bill 1 now heads to the Senate and Senator Whitney Westerfield says he’ll be supporting it when it comes up in the first full week of February.
