Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority is cancelling the Water Shortage Warning, and customers can resume normal use and consumption of water.
According to a news release, HWEA experience unusually high water demand and set two consecutive records for production on Christmas Day and December 26. A review determined the unprecedented increase in winter time demand was due to approximately 165 customer leaks caused by the extreme cold temperatures.
Officials say the warning was issued not to avoid possible water main pipe failures, but to encourage customers to conserve water and find and stop any leaks, to help lessen the demand on the system. The restriction for vehicle washing occurred because under city ordinance, class one water usage is the first usage to be restricted.
HWEA says the appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience during the shortage.
