Outside Shooting Carries Kentucky Past Florida A&M
After falling to UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic on Saturday, No. 19/16 Kentucky was looking to create some positive feelings heading into the holiday break this week. And the Cats were able to do just that, beating Florida A&M 88-68 on Wednesday night at Rupp Arena. Kentucky hit 31 of 59 from the field (52.5 percent) including 13 of 23 from three-point range (56.5 percent). The 13 three-pointers made were a season high for UK. Cason Wallace paced the Cats, scoring a career-high 27 points, while also dishing out nine assists and grabbing four steals. Wallace’s previous career best was 15 points, which came in the season opener against Howard. His 27 points was one shy of the season best by any Wildcat, which came when Oscar Tshiebwe scored 28 against Yale.
Kentucky Tops Ohio on Wednesday
Five players scored in double figures as the Kentucky women’s basketball team beat Ohio University 95-86 on Wednesday at Memorial Coliseum. Robyn Benton led the Cats with 20 points, while Ajae Petty added 15 points and eight rebounds. Blair Green, Eniya Russell and Jada Walker each had 14 points for UK. Walker added eight assists and five rebounds.
Carr Shines in 81-67 Win Over DePaul
The Louisville women’s basketball team (10-4, 1-0) jumped out to a fast start and held on for a 81-67 win over DePaul (9-4, 2-0) at Wintrust Arena Wednesday night. With the win, Louisville finished the four-game road trip a perfect 4-0 and have won five games in a row heading into the Christmas Break. Chrislyn Carr was the leader for the Cardinals as she scored a team-high 21 points and set a career high with 17 rebounds. It was her fourth career double-double and her first since she joined the Cardinals. The 17 rebounds were the most in a game by a Louisville player since Myisha Hines-Allen had 18 on January 18, 2018, against Pitt. Four Cardinals scored in double figures as Hailey Van Lith added 17 points, Merissah Russell tied a career high with 11 and Morgan Jones added 10 points. Jones and Van Lith tied for the team lead with five assists each.
Cardinals Face Quick Turnaround for ACC Road Trip to NC State
Louisville men’s basketball has a quick turnaround of just over 48 hours for an ACC road game at NC State at 7 p.m. ET Thursday in Raleigh, N.C. The game will air on the ACC Network. After two straight wins, the Cardinals suffered a 75-67 setback at home against Lipscomb on Tuesday. NC State beat Vanderbilt 70-66 on Saturday in the Legends of Basketball Showcase in Chicago, Ill. Louisville is 14-11 all-time against NC State and had won three in a row in the series before a 79-63 home loss on Jan. 12 of last season. NC State head coach Kevin Keatts was an assistant coach and later associate head coach at Louisville under Rick Pitino from 2011-14.
WKU Rounds Out Non-Conference with a Road Trip to South Carolina
WKU Hilltopper Basketball is looking to close out its non-conference slate with a win as it takes on South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. CT. The Hilltoppers are coming off a loss at Louisville last week while the Gamecocks most recently lost at East Carolina on Saturday. Head coach Rick Stansbury, a 14-year head coach in the SEC, is 12-6 all-time against the Gamecocks. Pre-Game at 5:30 on Newsradio 95.3 FM and 1230 AM WHOP.
Lady Toppers Fall to California Baptist
WKU women’s basketball fell to California Baptist, 69-61, on Wednesday afternoon in Riverside, California. The Lady Toppers came back from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but were unable to secure the comeback. The Lady Toppers were outrebounded 49-38. It was only the fourth time this season WKU has been outrebounded. WKU connected on 10 threes in the game, the second most for the Lady Toppers this season. Mya Meredith was WKU’s leading scorer with 16 points, tying her season high. She also had six rebounds. Hope Sivori had her second straight double digit game with 13 points. She connected on four threes. Alexis Mead filled out the stat sheet with six points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
Strong second half propels Govs to nonconference finale victory
Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team scored 42 second-half points to conclude its nonconference schedule with a 64-51 victory against UNC Asheville, Wednesday, in the Winfield Dunn Center. Shamarre Hale scored a game-high 15 points and made six of her seven shots from the field, as Austin Peay (5-5) secured its second-straight win ahead of its inaugural ASUN Conference slate following the New Year.
Miscues Costly in Racers Loss At MTSU
The Murray State Racers fell 83-67 to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Wednesday at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The game for MSU (7-5) brings an end to their non-league season as they play games exclusively in the Missouri Valley Conference for the final 18 games of the regular season. The Racers, 2-0 in Valley play, host Southern Illinois at the CFSB Center (Dec. 29). Rob Perry led the Racers with 15 points, while Jamari Smith and DJ Burns added 11 points and 10 points to the MSU offense. JaCobi led the team with six assists, while Smith grabbed six rebounds.
Austin Peay falls at No. 8/11 Tennessee
Austin Peay State University lost to No. 8/11 Tennessee, 86-44, on Wednesday. The Volunteers won their 23rd-straight game inside Thompson-Boling Arena. Austin Peay begins its first season in ASUN Conference play Dec. 29 at Queens. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. CT.
