Warriors Pick Up Two Needed Wins

After tough losses to the likes of Trigg County, McLean County, and UHA, Heritage Christian was in need of some bounce back wins.

They would get them in back-to-back wins against Foundation Christian, 53-34, and Valor Christian, 90-51.

The Falcons of FCA were in town Friday night and they arrived a little late. That could be the reason for the low score as it was considerably later starting the Varsity matchup than intended.

The Warriors struggled early, and give the Falcons credit they were extremely physical. It also did not help that Head Coach Matt McGowan was forced to remain seated for the entirety of the game due to a technical assessed to his team for a pre-game dunk.

Needless to say though HCA recovered well, coming out strong in the second half with their feet underneath them.

Ultimately shooting better than forty-five percent from three and fifty percent from the field. They were led by Jason Leek with seventeen points and Carlos Robles aided him with fifteen of his own. Robles also had seven rebounds, while Leek had four assists.

The unsung hero though will continue to be Manny Diaz. A young man who has rejoined this team and made a huge difference for them. Eight points, seven rebounds, and so very much defensively that does not necessarily show up on a stat sheet.

Coach McGowan needed more size and tenacity and Diaz has those two things in spades.

After that gritty performance facing FCA that went well into the evening, past ten pm, several players were excited about their Saturday game against Valor Christian hoping they would be able to get the offense rolling again. They certainly did that putting up ninety points.

Any day/night you score ninety in a high school game it means everyone got involved. Robles might have led the way with thirty-two points, keep an eye on him moving up that all-time scorers list, but Leek pitched in twelve, Cameron Higgins had fifteen, both Trenton Fowler and Charlie Wells had eight, and Diaz had seven.

Robles also had twelve rebounds alongside Diaz with nine and Higgins with seven.

Just for good measure Robles was three assists shy of a triple double with seven.

Interestingly, despite putting up ninety points, the Warriors were not all that efficient. Just twelve percent from three, less  than fifty percent from the field, and right at fifty percent from the charity stripe. That being said, they did take eighty-five shots to VCA’s thirty-six, so efficiency will take a hit.

The Warriors will go on the road and more then likely pick up a third straight win at Oak Ridge on Monday. After that, it is a week off before they jump back into the deep end in a post-Christmas tournament at Todd County Central the 28th through the 30th.
