Bitter cold coming, snow possible later this week

Bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills are almost a certainty in Western Kentucky by the end of the week and at least some accumulating snow is appearing more likely.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says arctic air will settle into the region beginning on Thursday and lasting through Christmas. High temperatures Friday and Saturday will be in the teens and lows could be near zero and perhaps below zero if there’s snow on the ground.

Wind chill values by Friday morning will be as low as -15 and the wind chill could remain below zero for as long as 36 hours.

Meanwhile, confidence is growing that the region will see accumulating snow somewhere in the Thursday evening to Friday morning timeframe, several factors will determine exactly when and how much.

It’s possible the precipitation could begin as plain rain before a transition to mixed precipitation and then snow. An inch or two of snow appears probable at this point, but a little more or less is certainly not out of the question with the event so many days away.

Those planning to travel Thursday or Friday should keep a close eye on the forecast as there could certainly be travel impacts if the current forecast comes to fruition.
