Shop With a Cop event brings Christmas in early for local children

If you saw numerous law enforcement vehicles with lights and sirens blaring head down Fort Campbell Boulevard Wednesday night, then you witnessed the Shop with a Cop event getting started.

Kids got to ride in the vehicles as they headed to Walmart—some honking Christmas carols along with the sirens—to do some Christmas shopping for their families. Children purchased for their parents, siblings, grand parents and more, all with the hope of providing them with a good holiday—and Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Velez says they don’t know it, but they have presents bought already for themselves.

Once the presents are wrapped, Santa arrives later in the evening to deliver presents to the kids.

Velez says its always a fun event to take part in for the officers, many of who will donate not only their time, but likely their own money, to help the kids have a great time.

Coordinator Lisa Gould has been involved in Shop with a Cop for nearly 30 years, and she says that’s an exciting milestone for an event that never fails to bring smiles to faces, on both the kids and the officers.

Gould herself, along with husband Henry Gould, donates time, money and experience to the cause in numerous ways, helping make sure those families most in need in the community are connected to the program, from all across Christian County.

The agencies taking part in Shop with a Cop include the Hopkinsville Police Department, Christian County Sheriff’s Department, Fort Campbell Military Police and the Christian County Jail.
