Kentuckians who have two or more gas, water or electric meters will have to pay sales tax on each account that’s not their primary residence beginning in January.
The tax reform legislation approved in the 2022 session of the Kentucky General Assembly, House Bill 8, added to the services that are eligible for the state sales tax as part of an overall effort to gradually reduce the income tax to zero.
One change that takes effect in January is that second meters will be taxed 6 percent each month, but Brent Gilkey with Pennyrile Electric says you should see no change if you simply have one residential meter for each utility.
Folks who will see a change are those with a second home or other structure that has an additional meter.
Kentuckians who have meters of the same utility in their name need to declare whether the address listed on their bill is their primary address and Gilkey says there is another form for landlords and tenants.

Customers of Hopkinsville Electric Service, Kentucky Utilities, Atmos Energy and your local water provider will also need to fill out forms if they have two meters in their name.
Commercial accounts are already taxed and are not changed by House Bill 8.
