Five notable names are the newest inductees into the Todd County High Schools Hall of Fame.
They are Arthur Green, Mattie Knight Sanders, Frank Burnett Simpson, Dr. William “Bill” Weathers, and Carolyn Wells.
Chairman Fred Harper says the names were chosen by an anonymous selection committee.
Green, a 1973 graduate of Murray State University, the same year he started teaching at at Todd County Central High School, is the Mayor of Elkton, a former Todd County Judge-Executive and a retired teacher.
Sanders began her teaching career in 1961 at Elkton Elementary. The following year she transferred to Guthrie Elementary and remained there for 26 years before retiring in 1988.
Simpson was born 1919 in Leon County Texas. His career as an educator began as principal of Todd County Training High School then on to Attucks High School for a total of 21 years.
He was an assistant superintendent of Hopkinsville Independent and Jefferson County School Systems. Simpson then became the first black superintendent of the Jefferson County School System.
Weathers graduated from Todd County Central High School in 1965. He earned his PhD at the University of Kentucky in Health Communication and continued there with a Master of Social Work program. These led him to Director of The Grateful Life Center, Board member of Women’s Crisis Center, and Task Force on Child Sexual Abuse of Northern KY. He continued his work in mental health in North Carolina and Tennessee before coming back to Blount Rural Health Center.
Wells attended Elkton Elementary and graduated Todd County Central High School class of 1968.
She was a 1972 graduate of Austin Peay State University before beginning her teaching career at Todd Central. She taught English, was technology coordinator, dean of women, author of the TCCHS newsletter, and a member of the curriculum and SBDM committees during her 34 years.
Individuals who were nominated but not selected this year will remain eligible indefinitely for selection. Anyone can nominate a person for the hall of fame by getting a nomination form from the Todd County Board of Education or emailing Harper at fred.harper21@yahoo.com
