Board of Elections hears concerns, answers questions

The Christian County Board of Elections addressed several concerns and heard positive reports heading into the election during its regular October meeting Thursday morning.

Division II Christian Circuit Court Judge candidate Stephanie Bolen spoke during public comments and asked about security of the machines while they are in storage in the Christian County Justice Center and asked that no one on the ballot be allowed access to them in any way.

Christian County Sheriff’s Major Jason Newby serves on the Board and says while the storage location is already very secure with locks and video surveillance, they’ll work with Circuit Court Clerk Paige Parker to ease any concern Bolen may have and be sure access is restricted.

Oak Grove Community Center will be used as a voting center for the first time and Director Melissa Lynch asked about potential electioneering on site and what the rules are. County Clerk Mike Kem said no campaigning is allowed within 100 feet of the door and that they have the authority to ask someone to not place signage anywhere on the property.

Kem says they have plenty of poll workers and reminded that in-person absentee voting begins next week.

Training for the poll workers is set for November 1 at the Bruce Convention Center.
