Hopkinsville man charged with assaulting police officer, resisting arrest

A Hopkinsville man is facing charge of resisting arrest and assault of a police officer following an incident early Friday morning.

According to the Hopkinsville police report, officers were in the area of Means Avenue just after midnight and observed a vehicle make an improper turn, prompting a traffic stop.  During the traffic stop, it was learned that the driver—33-year-old Paul Waites of Hopkinsville—had a warrant out for his arrest.

Waites allegedly became irate when asked to get out of the vehicle, and once out of the vehicle, began to resist against officers, including grabbing the door handle of the vehicle and refusing to let go.  Waites then allegedly punched a female officer in the face, and then officer were able to gain control of him and take him into custody.

Waites is charged with third-degree assault of an officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, improper turning and having only one working headlight.
