Family Court Judge hopefuls meet in LWV debate

The final debate forum held by the League of Women Voters Wednesday hosted the two hopefuls running to be the Family Court Judge in the newly created division in Christian County.

Christian County gained a second family court judge after passage of House Bill 214 by the Kentucky General Assembly earlier this year, which means that spot needs to be filled and will be come the November general election by either Judy Hall or Katherine Demps. Both candidates bring long careers of judicial service to the running, along with plenty of experience with family court specifically.

Demps says the most important thing a family court judge does is listen and empathize with the participants of court proceedings, many of whom are facing the hardest moments of their lives.

Hall says being able to fairly impart the law while having the best interest in mind of those involved is of upmost importance.

Demps says she believes there are changes that can be made to the court process that could help cases move faster and help alleviate the large case load that created the need for a second division the first place, such as having the judge take part in more pretrial conferences. Hall says she would look to expand the programs that are already in place, such as the toy room for children and other community events, to help the mental health of those participating in the court system.
