Candidates for County Clerk talk election, services and plans in League forum

There was a full slate on the schedule Wednesday for the return of Hopkinsville League of Women Voters debate forums, with the first round going to the candidates running for Christian County Clerk.

Longtime clerk Republican candidate Melinda Humphries is squaring off against current County Treasurer Democrat Walter Cummings on the November ballot and they discussed the Clerk’s Office’s finances, accessibility, elections and more. Both agreed that election security and integrity is of vital import, with Cummings saying he intends to make sure poll workers receive proper training and to focus on accuracy.

Humphries says Christian County has always had very safe elections, but she will make sure the process is transparent while upholding election laws.

Both candidates also agreed that the Clerk’s Office should become more accessible, but the current historic building allows for little options to make it so. Humphries says she would make sure the staff is appropriately trained to cut down on any wait times, and Cummings says he would expand the hours of operation so people would have more chances to go to the office during the day for their services.
