The investigation into Trigg County Sheriff Aaron Acree has been turned over to a new special prosecutor.
Todd County Attorney Jeff Traughber was initially assigned the case in July by the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, but he sent a letter to the executive director of special prosecutions on September 14 requesting to be removed from the case.
He writes that it has become apparent that the investigation of Trigg County Sheriff Aaron Acree “may result in multiple charges including at least one felony.”
Traughber continues, “Therefore, it is my belief that the matter is better suited for referral to a Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office that possesses the necessary staff and resources to dedicate to the prosecution.”
He adds the “Todd County Attorney’s Office lacks the prosecutorial staff and resources that this matter demands and therefore I ask that I be relieved of the appointment in this matter.”
The Attorney General’s Office has since contacted 45th Judicial District Commonwealth’s Attorney Clayton Adams, with Adams confirming to WHOP News he’s “been appointed as the special prosecutor in an investigation regarding Trigg County Sheriff Aaron Acree.”
Adams says he cannot comment further on the ongoing investigation.
