The Kentucky Wildcats are announcing captains for the upcoming football season. Quarterback Will Levis and lineman Kenneth Horsey were named captains on the offense. Linebackers Deandre Square, J-J Weaver and Jacquez Jones will get the “C” on defense.
Now those names enough would be great choices as captains. However, there are two other names included.
Offensively Junior RB Chris Rodriguez and Defensively LB Jordan Wright.
Both have been named captains despite having to serve suspensions. Wright will only miss the opener according to multiple reports, while Rodriguez is facing a three or four game suspension according to Head Coach Mark Stoops.
The fact that in spite of their suspensions they were both named to leadership roles says a couple things.
- They are both regretful of their decisions and do not intend on making them habit.
- Coach Stoops clearly feels they both still have the trust and admiration of the locker room and team.
- That they both possess a rare leadership quality to rebound from mistakes with dignity and maintain the aforementioned respect of their peers.
All of that should give Wildcats fan ample hope that this team can and will live up to expectations both individual and team specific.
Now we are still awaiting specific word on exact length of suspensions and all the names that are possibly set to serve, but again, naming them each a captain means Coach Stoops has confidence they will return ready to go AND that there should be no subsequent issues.
