School board votes to lower tax rate, selects Alliance Corporation as construction manager

The Christian County School Board voted to lower the property tax rate on real estate and keep the other rates the same at Thursday’s meeting, along with selection a construction project manager.

The approved general fund tax levy of 42.2 cents per 100 dollars of assessed value on real property is a tenth of a cent reduction from the current rate of 42.3 cents and the 42.8 cents on personal property represents no change. The cut will mean a dollar less on the property tax bill for the owner of a $100,000 home. Director of Finance Jessica Darnall explained that even with the decrease on the real estate rate, they will be able meet all their budget obligations.

She also explained how SEEK funding from the state is balanced out by the local funds generated by tax revenue.

The tax rates were set unanimously, with board member Jeff Moore not present.

The recommendation to the board was to accept Alliance Corporation out of Glasgow, Kentucky to act as construction manager for the Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy consolidation project.  Executive Vice President Tim Geegan says their intent is to reign in over-budget bids, represent the district to companies, and stay on track while being fiscally responsible.

The board approved Alliance Corporation unanimously—this move comes after the original bids for construction of the consolidated high school came in significantly higher than projected, with the board rejecting those bids.
