Bond reduction motion denied for man charged with manslaughter

A motion to reduce bond was denied Monday morning in Christian Circuit Court for 32-year old Jeremy Ryan Smith of Hopkinsville, who is charged in connection with a fatal drug overdose in May.

Smith is charged with second-degree manslaughter and trafficking in a controlled substance and public defender Mary Roher cited his lack of a felony criminal history and connections to the community as reasons to reduce his $25,000 cash bond.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith cited evidence indicating Jeremy Smith had a history of drug trafficking and ‘troubling statements’ made by the suspect as reasons to keep him in jail.

He also cited Marsy’s law in saying the victim’s mother has indicted she feels safer with Jeremy Smith in jail.

Judge Andrew Self ultimately left bond the same, saying he too is troubled by posts Jeremy Smith made on social media.

An indictment against Jeremy Smith alleges he caused the May 8 death of a victim identified only as “S.G.” by distributing the controlled substance that led to the overdose. He allegedly provided the drug to the victim the prior day.
