CCPS opens new school year Wednesday, motorists reminded to use caution

When the new school year opens Wednesday morning for Christian County Public Schools, it will mark the first time there’s a public safety officer assigned to every building.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel says those trained officers will help ensure students, faculty and staff are safe in their schools.

He’s hopeful those SRO’s will build relationships where students will feel comfortable telling them if there’s a potential threat or issue.

Bentzel says there are numerous other measures in place to keep schools as safe as possible.

Meanwhile, area law enforcement agencies are reminding motorists to be mindful of school buses picking up and dropping off students and of children who may be walking to school. Obey school zone speed limits, always stop for those loading or unloading buses and never attempt to pass another vehicle in a school zone.

There will be an increased focus by police on those school zones in the first couple weeks of the new year to be sure motorists are slowing down and using appropriate caution.
