Fancy Farm picnic kicks off political season

The annual Fancy Farm picnic in Graves County is the traditional kickoff to the campaign season in Kentucky and candidates and office-holders took to the stage Saturday afternoon as they seek votes this year and next.

Former state Representative Charles Booker was one of a few Democrats who spoke and railed against his general election opponent, U.S. Senator Rand Paul, claiming Paul doesn’t have Kentucky’s best interest in mind.

Kelley Paul, the wife of Senator Paul, spoke on his behalf as the senator remains in Washington, and says there are two distinct choices in the race.

Several Republicans seeking the GOP nomination for governor next year also spoke, including Ag. Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles, who joked about another state attorney general in Daniel Cameron running for the top spot.

Democrats in the crowd chanted “Breonna Taylor” loudly at AG Cameron as he vowed to support the law enforcement community in Kentucky.

State Auditor Mike Harmon and Representative Savannah Maddux also made their cases for the nomination at the 142nd fundraiser for the Saint Jerome Catholic Parish in Graves County.
