Christian is among four counties in Kentucky receiving grant funding for rubber-modified asphalt projects utilizing waste tires.
About $108,000 was awarded to Christian County to repave a portion of Witty Lane using the rubber modified asphalt.
The remainder of the road has or will be repaved with traditional asphalt and the county will monitor how each method holds up over time.
A news release from Governor Andy Beshear and the Energy and Environment Cabinet says thin asphalt overlays utilizing rubber-modified asphalt have been shown to reduce noise, are more resistant to cracking and rutting, and increase the life of the roadway by seven to 10 years.
The money for these projects comes from the Kentucky Waste Tire Trust Fund, which receives $2 from every new tire sold in the commonwealth.
