Kentuckians experiencing a mental health crisis can call or text a three-digit number, 988, to get help.
Martha Mather with U of L Peace Hospital says the new number — which reaches the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline — provides free and confidential emotional support from mental health professionals.
988 is expected to be easier to remember in times of crisis.
An average of 20,000 calls per year are made to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline in Kentucky. That number is projected to double with the creation of the 988 number.
