South Virginia St. assault suspect to receive evaluation, treatment at KCPC

A man accused of severely injuring a woman during an assault at a South Virginia Street apartment in January has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial at this time and he’s been ordered to the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Thirty-six-year-old Isaac Benjamin allegedly caused major injuries to a 43-year old Pembroke woman during the assault, including multiple broken bones. The victim was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Defense attorney Rick Sandborn and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith agreed with the need for Benjamin to go to KCPC during a hearing Monday morning and Judge Andrew Self explained it to him after he made several attempts talk at length about the case in open court.

Smith noted an initial belief that Benjamin will become competent again to stand trial with treatment and medication.

Benjamin remains in the Christian County Jail until a bed comes open at KCPC.
