Trial was vacated for 2020 East Second Street shooting suspect Travis Mayes in Christian Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon, and he will have a new attorney moving forward.
Speaking with Judge John Atkins, Mayes says he feels like the working relationship between he and public defender Doug Moore has broken down to the point where he feels Moore no longer has his best interest in mind.
While Moore contends, he has done all he can to represent Mayes well, he does agree that it would be best for all involved if Mayes received a new lawyer—Shannon Powers out of Murray is willing to take over.
With no objection from the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, Judge Atkins vacated the trial date that was set for this week and pushed it back to December 5, to give Powers time to become familiar with the case.
A pretrial hearing was set for September 7.
Mayes is accused of shooting Darrell Bateman on East Second Street in Hopkinsville in February of 2020.
