Pennyrile Electric is among 12 internet service providers and local governments across Kentucky receiving just over $89 million in grant funding to expand broadband access as the cooperative continues its partnership with HES Energy Net.
Governor Andy Beshear announced the 46 grants Monday morning in Frankfort saying the total investment with local matches will be just over $203 million in the commonwealth.
He says Pennyrile Electric is receiving just under $14 million to expand broadband access to approximately 5,600 homes in its service area.
Pennyrile Electric President and CEO Alan Gates says, “We have provided electricity to local residents and businesses since 1937, and we are excited to deliver yet another critical utility that will further empower our members and communities and enhance their quality of life,” while HES General Manager Jeff Hurd says “The investment required to bring fast, reliable internet service to the Hopkinsville Electric and Pennyrile Electric service area is significant. We appreciate the state recognizes how important this investment in digital infrastructure is.”
The West Kentucky Rural Telephone Coop Corporation received $3.3 million to help expand broadband service to 843 unserved homes and businesses in Marshall and Calloway County.
The funds come from the American Rescue Plan dollars granted to Kentucky from the federal government.
