MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 6/3/22

NBA

The Boston Celtics outscored the Golden State Warriors 40-16 in the fourth quarter to win 120-108 in Game One in San Francisco. Al Horford scored 26 points for the Celtics. Jaylen Brown added 24 for Boston. Stephen Curry scored 34 points in the loss for the Warriors. Game Two is Sunday in San Francisco.

NFL

Tom Brady is sharing some thoughts on his decision to return to football after a short-lived retirement. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback said this week that he felt pressure to end his retirement because of NFL free agency. Brady said that he didn’t feel “100 percent committed” to retiring and that free agency pushed him to reconsider his decision. The 44-year-old is signed with Tampa Bay through the 2022 season and hasn’t spoken on his future past this year.

Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick announced he is retiring after 17 NFL seasons. The journeyman started for nine different teams over his career, including the Tennessee Titans, which is an NFL record. The 39-year-old spent last season with Washington but played in just one game due to a hip injury. Fitzpatrick ends with nearly 35-thousand passing yards and 223 touchdowns in 165 career games.

Golf

Six players are leading the way at the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Mackenzie Hughes, Davis Riley, Cameron Young, Luke List, Cameron Smith, and K.H. Lee are five under par after the first round.
Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified from for having an illegal substance on the face of his three-wood. PGA Tour chief referee Steve Rintoul said the tour became aware of the issue after someone emailed a photo of the club head that had been posted to Instagram.

Mina Harigae at seven under par has a one shot lead over amateur Ingrid Lindblad going into today’s second round of the US Women’s Open at Pine Needles Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
