Attorneys discussing potential resolution in East 18th St. arson case

A mental evaluation has determined the man indicted for setting fire to an East 18th Street home in September of last year is competent to stand trial and negotiations are underway between the Commonwealth and suspect’s attorney for a possible plea deal.

Public Defender Eric Bearden told the court Wednesday he doesn’t necessarily believe 51-year old Anthony Taylor is competent to face the first-degree arson charge at trial because of mental issues, but he’s going to review an offer that’s coming from the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Taylor asked Judge John Atkins to consider releasing him on a signature bond, but any bond discussion was put off until the next court date.

Another hearing was scheduled for next Wednesday.

No one was injured in the fire that caused about $40,000 in damages to the 812 East 18th Street home on September 1.
