Mayor Lynch talks budget, non-partisan election committee

Hopkinsville Mayor Wendell Lynch appeared on WHOP Monday morning to talk budget, road work and non-partisan elections.

A special committee was formed last year with the intent to study the possibility of non-partisan elections in Hopkinsville, how that would change things, become educated on that type of election and to host public forums.  The committee was formed in response to when Council approved non-partisan local elections while maintaining the 12-ward structure last year, but Mayor Lynch vetoed the ordinance to allow more time for studies and community education.

Mayor Lynch says their work is now complete—they presented their final report to the Committee of the Whole last week.

The proposed budget was also presented to the Committee of the Whole last week and that was forwarded on to city council, to be taken up in June. Mayor Lynch says it contains a much-needed five percent cost of living adjustment for city employees, and no tax increases.

He says the city will also have re-paved 30 miles of city streets but the end of the fiscal year in June.

The mayor also says he is accepting applications for the City of Hopkinsville’s fourth City Diplomat Program. All adult Christian County residents and business owners interested are encouraged to apply.
