The second major of the season, the PGA Championship begins today at Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK. Louisville area native Justin Thomas is in the field, but Phil Mickelson will not be defending his title. According to tournament organizers, Mickelson is keeping himself on hiatus after he talked disparagingly about both the PGA Tour and the rival tour he helped start, LIV Golf.
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau withdrew after playing a practice round on Wednesday. DeChambeau posted on Twitter that he wants to make a full return when he is 100 percent ready to compete at golf’s highest level. The 28-year-old has been out of action since early April, missing the cut at last month’s Masters, after carding a 12 over total in the first two rounds. He elected to have surgery on his left wrist to repair a fractured hook of the hamate bone.
