Demario White, the man charged in connection with a shooting on East 18th Street the day before Thanksgiving last year, entered an Alford plea in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.
White entered an Alford plea—which is a guilty plea where the defendant maintains his innocence, but acknowledges there is likely enough evidence to result in a conviction should the case go to trial—to two-counts of assault under extreme emotional disturbance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, first-degree wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence. Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling explained those come with a recommended sentence of ten years, but if he fails to appear for final sentencing, that could become 40 years.
White will be released on an ankle monitor pending final sentencing, with Judge John Atkins setting numerous release conditions.
Final sentencing was set for June 22.
White allegedly shot 28-year old Devaunte Hampton in the leg at 1200 East 18th and fired a shot that grazed a female victim, causing her only minor injuries.
