Kentucky Writers’ Day highlights literacy, creative expression

The state celebrated National Writers’ Day Tuesday morning with a ceremony at the state capital, where writers, artists and Poets Laurette gathered.

Governor Andy Beshear says all art is worth celebrating and he thanked all writers for the effort and time they pour into their craft, saying they’re one of the many reasons for the great place the state finds itself in today.

Kentucky Poet Laurette Crystal Wilkinson spoke on how important writing and literacy are, and encouraged Kentuckians of all walks of life that they can be a success.

She took time to highlight the life and memory of Hopkinsville native and writer Gloria Jean Watkins, also known as bell hooks, saying she is one of many writers that Kentucky is proud to call their own.

The Writer’s Day celebration was established in 1990 to honor the birth of Robert Penn Warren, a renowned author, Todd Countian and Kentucky’s first Poet Laurette.
