CCSB approves student representative, gets virtual tour of new high school

The Christian County School Board got a virtual tour of what the Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy could look like at Thursday’s meeting, while also approving revisions to the school calendar and the board’s make up.

Jack Faber with Hafer Architects gave the virtual tour, saying that the project is extensive and enormous—the consolidated high school is currently expected to cost about $137 million to construct and they are ahead of schedule.

He says safety, state of the art technology and infrastructure and educational opportunities are their top priorities in their design, and they’ve been working with numerous professionals to create spaces that benefits all students.

The board approved a minor calendar revision to adjust the school year 2021-2022 to make up for a weather day that was used due to snow in January, with Director of Pupil Personnel clarifying it adds a contract day in June for staff.

The board also approved a revision to the board policy on a 3-to-2 vote that would make it so a student representative would be able to sit on the board and advocate on behalf of the student body.

The student member would not be a voting member of the board, and could attend meetings that were only in open session. Some board members did want amendments that would allow for a student representative from each high school, instead of only one of them, and changing it from a 3.5 GPA requirement to a 3.0, but the revision was approved as presented.
