Third District state Senator Whitney Westerfield believes the 2022 session of the Kentucky General Assembly was a success and he’s especially happy with the biennial budget.
The Republican who represents Christian, Caldwell and Muhlenberg counties notes the spending plan includes a long overdue pay raise for Kentucky’s state employees to make their wages more competitive with other neighboring states.
He’s also pleased with the tax reform bill that passed that could eventually eliminate the state income tax by incremental half-point reductions if Kentucky meets revenue benchmarks by broadening the sales tax on more services—though he wishes the plan was more aggressive.
Senator Westerfield believes it’s likely the sales tax will eventually need to be raised to eliminate the income tax, but is hopeful it won’t require a sales tax on groceries or medicine.
