Legislators override Gov’s vetoes

New restrictions on abortion are in place in Kentucky.

Lawmakers overturned Governor Andy Beshear’s veto yesterday on the controversial abortion legislation, which bans abortions after 15 weeks and restricts access to medicinal abortions.  Pro-choice protesters gathered at the capitol throughout the day, with chants growing when the veto was up for debate.

Governor Beshear had expressed concerns about victims of rape or incest and argued the bill might be unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, a Kentucky ban on transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports is now law.  Lawmakers overrode Governor Beshear’s veto of the controversial measure.  Supporters say the new law will maintain a fair environment for biological girls competing in middle school to college sports.  Opponents say the legislation isn’t necessary.
