School board approves several items related to consolidation project

Several items were approved in relation to the high school consolidation project Thursday at a special called meeting of the Christian County School Board.

First on the agenda was a resolution electing to conduct the Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy project under the newly signed House Bill 678, which Assistant Superintendent Josh Hunt says will allow them to expedite some parts of the process by eliminating the need for prior approval from the Kentucky Department of Education and other such agencies.

That was approved unanimously. Several waivers were also approved, including a wavier to allow for volleyball net inserts in the new school’s gymnasium, allowing only one shower head in student locker rooms and to waive locker requirements in the facility. Hunt says there would be 50 lockers for each academy, and current trends show that less students are actually using lockers.

Also approved was a wavier that would allow the usage of restricted funds to bond for the construction of athletic facilities in relation to the consolidation project, should the need arise—in money that might possibly be used would have to come back to the board for approval.

A proposal to move the start time of school board meeting from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. stalled at Thursday’s meeting following discussion, with no one entering a motion for it to be considered. Board members were open to moving the times, but wanted to hear from the public first before making a decision, so it could return to the agenda at a later meeting.
